Travelling... Alone... Do many people do it? It it recommended? Can you really enjoy it? Travelling alone that is. Can/would/should you do it? I know a few lot of people who would never ever think of travelling alone. "Travel alone? Company is what makes the trip fun", they would say. I however, am not so sure. I love to travel. Well travelling for the sake of travelling is not fun. Travelling so you can be in some place, some place nice, where you can spend some time enjoying yourself is fun. Often times however, you may not be able to find company because people are not interested in what you are interested in or maybe they have other plans or maybe you have a different temparement than most other people i.e. you might want to take your own time going through a place seeing everything and others might have a different pace. So anyways, I found myself travelling alone a lot since last summer when I was in NJ. I drove to Pennsylvania and NJ state parks many times that summer driving alone, visiting places alone, capturing things through my camera. Initially, I thought that it was my new camera that was taking me places. But the summer came and went away and I am still travelling alone. Once a friend of mine told "Carpe diem" i.e. "Seize the Day" i.e live as if this is your last day on this planet. Well, for a long time I wanted to go visit places and could not find anyone. Weekends would come and go and I would sit in front of the TV, having wasted the time but not going where I wanted to. So, one day I decided, "I will go where I want; I will not wait for anyone." Thus, started my solitary trips. There are a bunch of things that I have found help when you are making a solitary trip. -Have a good selection of music (phil says use audio tapes) -Stop *very* often -Drink a ton of fluids -At the first sign of feeling tired, take a short stop -If you feel that you are becoming a danger on the road, take your car off-road, preferably at a Rest Area or an Exit and take a nap. -Keep some food in the car -Keep a cell; keep it charged (better yet, get a car charger) -Keep a flashlight -Buy a tent, keep it in the trunk -Keep a sleeping bag
